Scanning negatives with a camera
My flatbed scanner took four minutes per frame and still produced soft, noisy files. A camera on a copy stand takes a fraction of a second per frame and resolves the grain properly.
The setup
- An old copy stand โ a sturdy tripod pointing down also works.
- A light panel with a high colour rendering index.
- A 1:1 macro lens.
- A film holder that keeps the strip flat, or two strips of glass.
Settings that worked
| Aperture | f/8 โ sharpest for my lens, enough depth for slight curl |
|---|---|
| Focus | Manual, on the grain, at full magnification |
| Exposure | Histogram as far right as possible without clipping |
| Format | Raw, inverted later |
Dust
The camera sees every speck. A soft blower, clean gloves and a closed window help more than any software. What is left I remove by hand on the few frames worth printing.
